I keep seeing articles like this, about how people choosing to drink less is hurting bars and restaurants, and it's almost always framed as people, especially younger generations, don't like to drink.

They never seem to bring up the fact that a cocktail is like $20 now unless you go to a really divey dive bar. It's the same kind of reporting they on how no one goes to the movies anymore. It's always about changing habits, and never that movie tickets just cost a lot now.

Those Asians like tofu, he said. This is what we Mexicans like, he continued. He held forth a bag of homemade refried beans he was defrosting. Those Asians make all kinds of things out of soy beans. Tofu. Milk, he said. Why don't Mexicans make pinto bean milk? I asked him. He roared with laughter and gave me a fist bump.

If you haven't been keeping up with my latest quixotic endeavor, I am collecting these brass valves from the nitrous tanks for that people leave everywhere after they are done huffing them. It started as a byproduct of me building a wind chime out of the nitrous tanks, but now that I have quite a few of these valves, I'm grabbing them whenever I find their tanks lying in the gutter. Once I have enough, I'm going to see if I can melt them down into one ingot of brass to be reused for machining

A lot of times it feels like I don't get very much done, but a friend asked me what I did today and I started listing things off.

I repotted plants, helped my neighbor by cutting down a bunch of branches hanging onto his roof and power lines (low voltage, don't lecture me), worked on my wind chime, vacuumed, cleaned out the aquarium, went on a bike ride, and jogged.

That's actually a really busy day

Did I discover a new way to get rid of an annoying kinda-sexist guy bothering me at a bar? Maybe. Some guy was chatting me up whilst I was trying to read and saying things like, "Women! What are we gonna do with you?" He was very persistent until I told him I just need to marry someone rich so I can stop working. He stopped smiling and within a minute excused himself and left.

The way ICE and border patrol are acting isn't really new, it's just on a bigger scale now. Way back in like 2003, they stopped me and my friends on our way through Texas. We were just kids on a road trip, but they questioned my Chinese American friend about his citizenship, interrogated us about being drug smugglers, got us all out of my car, and threw all of our stuff all over the pavement. One of the agents joked about shooting my friend because he had a pocketknife clipped to his belt. The arrogance and contempt they are showing for people now is how they've been for a long time.
